Located on the northwestern edge of the Greater Toronto Area, Shelburne retains both its spectacular natural beauty and charming small town heritage. Once known as Jelly Corners named after William Jelly, who established the British Canadian Hotel there in 1865, the Canadian Parliament renamed it after the Earl of Shelburne, one of Canada’s earliest peacekeepers. The community first developed in the late 1840’s with the construction of the Toronto-Sydenham Road. In 1872, Jelly and his brother John had a survey of a village plot made with the anticipation of the arrival of the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway.
The town usually boasts the phrase “A People Place– A Change of Pace”, and truer words were never spoken. Shelburne transports you back to a time when all food was home cooked and music was a celebration to share with everyone. This charming town lights up during August for the Old Time Fiddle Contest and parade, where locals and visitors tap, stomp, and hum along to the sounds of fiddlers from all across North America. Here you can take a step back in history with the old Town Hall, which has been restored and contains Grace Tipling Hall a wonderfully entertaining antique theatre. Also, just around the corner is the old Shelburne Post Office , the restored original library, and also Jelly House, where entrepreneurs, hotel owners, and brothers William and John Jelly resided.
Shelburne contains spectacular natural areas full of fishing rivers and ponds, and is near the Boyne Valley Provincial Park which hosts a section of the Bruce Trail. Winter means great downhill and cross country skiing facilities, miles of snowmobile trails, snoeshoeing and backpacking. Summer boasts great opportunities to enjoy the excellent fishing and water sports the area provides.
